She was born on January 29th, 1954, in rural Mississippi, to Vernita Lee, a single mother, and housemaid. Oprah spent her first 6 years with her maternal grandmother. The upbringing of Oprah was very tough, and she lived in poverty. She was abused at the hands of a family friend and relatives.
Despite these hardships, Oprah was a good student and intelligent and became an honor student at the East Nashville High School. She got a full scholarship and proceeded to study communication. Her presence in the media started at a radio station WVOL.

1. It is a Biblical Thing
The real name of Oprah is “Orpah.” Winfrey was named “Orpah” after the biblical figure in the Book of Ruth, but people mispronounced it regularly and “Oprah” stuck. According to the Jewish tradition, Biblical “Orpah” gave birth to 4 Philistine giants.
Goliath was one of those giants. He’s famous for being killed by a shepherd boy with a sling. The rest of the army was very scared to step up to the plate. Oprah Winfrey may not have given birth to giants, but this woman has certainly become one of the most respected and inspirational giants in her own right.
2. Two Days after Kindergarten
Two days after kindergarten, Oprah wrote to her teacher saying she didn’t belong to that grade because she knows several big words. The teacher accepted and transferred her to first grade.

Oprah has been keeping a diary of all daily events in her life since the age of 15. For her, it is a way to remain grounded and to ensure that she is always moving forward on the journey of life.

5. It’s a Lifetime Achievement
Oprah won an Emmy award for her TV show in 1998. They offered her a lifetime achievement award. This was one of the best moments of her life. After the award, she chose to withdraw herself and her show from any future consideration for Emmy awards.
The reason she gave for this major decision? Oprah did not feel it was right to get more awards after she was given an award for her lifetime accomplishments.

The organization raised over $80,000,000. Oprah personally took care of all administrative costs linked to the charity, so that full amounts of all funds raised went to the charity programs.
